METHOD & GUIDANCE
How this calculation works
Keep tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive figures consistent, and use the rules and rate that apply to the relevant period and supply. Tool IQ recalculates every output immediately; nothing you enter is saved or sent to us.
How to use the result
Update rolling taxable turnover every month and run the separate next-30-day test when a large order or contract is expected. Check what counts as taxable turnover before relying on the headroom figure.
Worked example
At £78,000 of rolling taxable turnover and £8,000 expected in the next 30 days, the opening case remains £12,000 below the £90,000 rolling threshold while showing the near-term sales separately.
Common mistakes
- Checking only the accounting year instead of a rolling 12-month period.
- Excluding zero-rated sales from taxable turnover.
- Assuming the calculator determines whether every receipt is taxable, exempt or outside the scope.
Frequently asked questions
Is the vat registration threshold calculator free?
Yes. It requires no account and stores no calculation inputs.
Can I use the answer for a formal filing?
No. It is a planning estimate, not accounting, tax, legal or investment advice. Confirm material decisions with a qualified professional.
Does this calculator choose the correct VAT rate for me?
No. Enter the rate that applies to the supply. UK goods and services can be standard-rated, reduced-rated, zero-rated, exempt or outside the scope.
Is the threshold checked by tax year?
The main historic test uses a rolling 12-month total, so it should be checked continually rather than only at a year end. A separate next-30-day expectation test also applies.
Do zero-rated sales count toward taxable turnover?
Yes, zero-rated supplies are taxable supplies and generally count. Exempt and out-of-scope income require separate treatment.
